Star Wars Film From Deadpool & Wolverine Director Reportedly Gets Writer

The Star Wars film from Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy has reportedly added a writer in The Adam Project's Jonathan Tropper.

According to Deadline, the untitled Star Wars film will see Levy and Tropper unite again as the pair have already worked together on The Adam Project, This Is Where I Leave You, and Kodachrome.

Tropper has otherwise worked on Apple TV series See starring Jason Mamoa, Warrior, and the Banshee series.

The addition of Tropper at least suggests Levy's Star Wars film is moving forward, as despite the director saying in June 2024 he was still working on it, Disney has a track record of announcing Star Wars films that soon fade into obscurity.

That's not to say it will release any time soon though. "I am still developing my Star Wars movie and I would love to make it some day," Levy said at the time. "I have an idea that I'm excited about. Development is slow going and developing something with that amount of mythology scaffolding, it takes time."

Disney will certainly be eager to have Levy create a Star Wars film if the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-starring Deadpool & Wolverine proves a box office hit when it premieres on July 26, 2024, and the Marvel owner is reportedly already considering him as director of the next Avengers.

That project, set to release on May 1, 2026, would likely push his Star Wars film back even further, and it's already gone through ups and downs as the actor and writer strikes of 2023 pressed pause on production.

Disney has plenty of Star Wars movies coming up already though. Fans went a long time without any concrete release dates but it's now confirmed The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the next Star Wars film and hit cinemas on May 22, 2026.

December 18, 2026 and December 17, 2027 are also locked in as the two subsequent film premiere dates, but it's unclear which of Disney's roster will fill those slots. The most likely candidate is perhaps the Daisy Ridley led film from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, however, in which Rey looks to rebuild the Jedi Order 15 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker.

Other possibilities include Mangold's film focused on the dawn of the Force or another set to be a culmination of Star Wars shows like Ahsoka and The Mandalorian from Lucasfilm's chief creative officer Dave Filoni.

Thor Ragnarok and Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi is also working on a Star Wars film, though its progress is slow and steady as it's not expected until around 2030. Star Wars: Episode 8 - The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson also has an entire trilogy of films announced, but these aren't in active development either.

Finally, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins had a Rogue Squadron movie announced before it was cancelled due to her commitments to Wonder Woman 3. But as that film was cancelled itself, Jenkins revealed she still owed Disney a Star Wars script and thus sparked hope that Rogue Squadron was back in development.
