DC is about to reboot its entire cinematic universe and its new Green Lantern is "90% flawed and doesn't care" according to actor Nathan Fillion.
Speaking to Collider, Fillion shed some light on his iteration of Guy Gardner, better known by the superhero alias Green Lantern, who will make his first appearance in 2025's Superman from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn.
Fillion described the role as a "gold mine" for him because he loves to play characters with flaws and quirks, saying his version of Green Lantern has many.
"The reality is that people have flaws. We all have quirks. We all have vulnerabilities," he said. "You could have the most wonderful family, but be like, ‘Oh, my God, my dad drives me nuts. He’s got this one thing.’ Everybody’s got something, and I love to lean into those faults and flaws.
"It’s what makes people real and what allows audiences to relate, because we all know what that is. We all have our own. We witness it in other people. Guy Gardner is 90% flawed and doesn’t care. That’s one of his flaws. I think there’s a real freedom in playing that. So, for a guy who likes to play flaws and flawed people, Guy Gardner is a gold mine."
Little else is known about the character, or even which projects he will appear in beyond Superman, where he only has a minor role. Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran announced a Lanterns TV series as part of the DCU's Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, but even this is set to focus on intergalactic cops John Stewart and Hal Jordan, with no mention of Gardner.
Nothing has been said about the show since, however, and DC Studios is still remaining relatively tight-lipped about Superman, though details are slowly starting to emerge. The film, previously called Superman Legacy, will stick to its July 11, 2025 release date despite the writer and actor strikes which brought Hollywood to a standstill in 2023. It will tell the story of a young Superman as he looks to balance his Kryptonian and Kansan heritage, though Gunn has assured it definitely won't be an origin story.
Lots of other DC characters will appear alongside leads David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, such as Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and MarÃa Gabriela as The Engineer. Gunn confirmed these actors would play the roles in other DCU projects too.
