Captain America Star Chris Evans Weighs in on Superhero Fatigue and His Favourite Marvel Film

Captain America star Chris Evans has weighed in on the superhero fatigue debate and revealed his favourite Marvel Cinematic Universe film he starred in.

Speaking on a panel at Emerald City Comic Con, shared by AJFlilms 28 on YouTube, Evans said comic book movies in general don't get as much credit as they deserve because people seem to forget they're still big, difficult movies to make.

"I don't think they always get enough credit," he said. "Comic book movies in general, for whatever reason, don't always get the credit that I think they deserve. They're these big giant movies, there's a lot of cooks in the kitchen, but I think the empirical evidence is saying they're not easy to make.

If it was easier there'd be a lot more good ones. I'm not throwing shade.

"If it was easier there'd be a lot more good ones," he added, to laughs from the audience. "I'm not throwing shade. I'm just saying that, look, I've been a part of a few that missed, it happens." Before starring as Captain America in more than half a dozen MCU films, Evans played Johnny Storm, or the Human Torch, in the first two Fantastic Four films from Fox, which didn't perform well critically or commercially.

"Making a movie is tough, it's tough. And more cooks in the kitchen doesn't make it easier," Evans continued. "I think the Russo brothers have really done some great work. I don't want to highlight specific films in the Marvel catalogue but some of them are phenomenal, just really, objectively, independently great movies and I think they deserve a little bit more."

Superhero fatigue has been a widely discussed and controversial topic within entertainment realms. Marvel itself, once unmoving at the top of the box office, has struggled since the conclusion of Phase 3 of the MCU. Its latest film, The Marvels, was the MCU's worst box office performance to date, and only one MCU film, Deadpool & Wolverine, is set to release in 2024.

Having mentioned the Russo brothers, Evans said elsewhere in the panel that their first MCU film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is the most he's enjoyed making a Marvel film.

"It's my personal favourite Marvel movie that I have been part of," he said. "And it's not just for the movie itself but the experience.

"On the first film I was so nervous. You know what you're stepping into, you know what Marvel is expecting out of it, you're playing defence. You're playing not to lose. And I think when Winter Soldier came around we were all playing to win. It was the first film with the Russos and it was a lot to prove and to make your mark, and taking more risks, and the character felt more fleshed out, and it was a really exciting time, and I think they nailed it."

Evans and his character, Steve Rodgers, both hung up the Captain America shield at the end of the MCU's Phase 3, passing the mantle onto Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson. This character took on the role in the Falcon and The Winter Soldier Disney+ series and will continue on in Captain America: Brave New World.
