Taika Waititi Says He Won’t Be Involved in Thor 5

Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi says he isn’t making Thor 5. During an interview with Business Insider, the Marvel filmmaker, who also previously helmed Thor: Ragnarok, revealed he won’t return for another Thor sequel.

“I wouldn’t know if that’s accurate,” he said about rumors that Thor 5 is currently in development. “I know that I won’t be involved... I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for.”

Waititi currently has several projects in development, including his highly anticipated Star Wars film. “It’s still marinating,” he said. “I’ve been writing it.”

He’s also working on an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguru’s Klara and the Sun, which he says will likely be his next movie. “So that’s six, seven years gone,” he explained on why he won’t be doing Thor 5. “I’d imagine another Thor would be a lot sooner than that... But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris [Hemsworth].”

Even if Marvel does choose to push ahead without him, Waititi says he won’t be bitter about it. “I would never feel like they are cheating on me,” he said. “We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.”

After Love and Thunder, the director was pretty vocal about whether or not he would return to direct another, stating that he would... on one condition.

“It would need to be something surprising and unexpected for me to want to do it,” he said. “Like what would be the new take? The battles and all the fighting is fine, but I would want something that feels unexpected when it comes to the story. Like making just a $5 million movie with no fighting at all, just Thor on a road trip. Like Nebraska."

IGN’s Thor: Love and Thunder review gave it 7/10 and said: “Thor: Love and Thunder is largely successful in honoring Thor’s long journey towards self-actualization and rarely falters while keying into the crackling chemistry between leads Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Tessa Thompson. It’s essentially the MCU’s first romantic comedy, and plays with those tropes in delightful ways. But while Thor and Jane’s relationship is handled well, Love and Thunder is less deft -- and a lot safer than you’d expect -- in pushing the greater MCU story forward.”
