Squid Game: The Challenge Gets Its First Trailer and Netflix Premiere Date

Netflix has released the first full trailer for its upcoming reality series Squid Game: The Challenge, which premieres this November.

The streamer confirmed that the Squid Game spin-off will launch on November 22, with 456 real-life contestants battling it out in various challenges inspired by the hit Korean drama Squid Game, as well as some surprising new additions, to make it to the end of the competition and take home the $4.56 million cash prize.

As shown in the trailer, the reality version of Squid Game features several games from the flagship Netflix series, including variations of Red Light, Green Light and Glass Bridge. Another clip shows a triangular table reminiscent of the one used for the black-tie dinner event that the final three players attended in the original series.

There's also a brief look at the game guards in their masks and pink jumpsuits, the contestants in their matching green tracksuits, the brightly coloured maze staircase, and the giant piggy bank getting filled up with the $4.56 million winners fund, which the trailer states is "the biggest cash prize in reality show history".

While the reality series appears to be all fun and games, it hasn't been without its controversy. Multiple reports emerged earlier this year about the show's alleged unsafe filming environments, with contestants calling the production an "inhumane disaster" that led to some participants requiring medical attention on set.

In a statement shared with Variety, a spokesperson for Netflix said in response to the claims: "We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew, and invested in all the appropriate safety procedures. While it was very cold on set — and participants were prepared for that — any claims of serious injury are untrue."

The show on which its based, Squid Game, became a runaway sensation when it arrived on Netflix in 2021, with IGN's own review of the first season calling it "a white-knuckle thriller, drama, and episodic psychological breakdown with a sickly pastel veneer" that is "equal parts gut-wrenching and squirm-inducing".
