Warrior Nun Returns As Film Trilogy After Netflix Cancellation

It’s official: Warrior Nun is back, this time as a trilogy of movies. According to executive producer Dean English, the recently-canceled Netflix series is being relaunched as a new film trilogy.

“I am very happy to announce that Warrior Nun is coming back as a trilogy of motion pictures,” he confirmed via a new website. “Once again, a trilogy of feature films. Three.”

Thanking the fans for their support, English said: “It’s because of you and your incredible energy that we keep pushing forward to make these stories. You guys really make it all worthwhile. So, thank you so much for your continued support.”

Warrior Nun debuted on Netflix in July 2020 and ran for two seasons before it was canceled. However, fans soon rallied to start a campaign to bring it back. The hashtag #SaveWarriorNun has repeatedly trended, with more than 123,000 people (to date) signing an online petition to renew the show for a third season.

Creator Simon Barry recently confirmed the show had been saved but wouldn’t go into details about how, except to confirm it would not be on Netflix. “Today I'm happy to officially report that because of your combined voices, passion, and amazing efforts - Warrior Nun will return and is going to be more EPIC than you could imagine," he said. “More details to come! SOON! Thank you!!"

The upcoming film trilogy is an exciting prospect for Warrior Nun fans, but details remain scarce. For one thing, we still have no idea whether original star Alba Baptista will be back as the titular Warrior Nun, and it’s likely we won’t know for a while. After all, the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes mean that actors are not allowed to complete affected deals.

However, this could be just the start of the Warrior Nun revival. “Some may ask, ‘Does this perhaps infer that there’s going to be a universe being launched of Warrior Nun, which could expand into films and TV series following characters that we already know?’ ” said English. “The answer to that question is yes. And there will be more details in the future.”

IGN’s Warrior Nun review gave it 7/10 and said: “Warrior Nun may not break the mold when it comes to supernatural adventure, but it tells its unexpected ‘chosen one’ story very well and is carried quite nicely by lead Alba Baptista in her first English-speaking role. Tropes get recycled quite a bit here, but solid performances, reverent writing, and the Spanish backdrop all lend themselves nicely to a series that's decided to take its time with its characters, mythology, and stakes.”
