The third season of Netflix's The Witcher is nearly here and IGN can exclusively reveal a behind-the-scenes clip that features the stars and creators of the series discussing what fans can expect in these new episodes.
Volume 1 of The Witcher's third season will arrive on June 29 and this clip is focused on the events that will take place in these first five episodes. There is no need to worry, however, as the wait for Volume 2 won't be too terrible as the final three episodes will be released less than a month later on July 27.
As for what this season is about, The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich shares that it is "mostly based" on Andrzej Sapkowski's Time of Contempt, which is the fourth book in The Witcher series.
"Not only are the stories really fun and epic, but I think it has some real fan favorite moments," Hissrich said.
We then hear from Henry Cavill (Geralt), Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), and Freya Allan (Ciri) about how the adventure begins with their three characters together as a family. While their reunion is a great one, it's not a peaceful or stable one as Ciri is in hiding and there are many out there who wish them harm. However, that doesn't mean they are standing still.
"They're re-establishing their relationship as Yennefer is teaching Ciri how to harness her magic," Allan says before teasing an exciting team-up years in the making. "It was crucial to show how she's improved and how she is now actually bringing that into helping in situations. I just love the fights, and then getting to do one with Henry... I've been waiting for this moment."
Cavill then discussed Geralt's thought process in these episodes, revealing we'll see a side of Geralt we don't usually see.
"He wants to train his adopted daughter to be as good as he is," Cavill said. "You get to see a deeper side to Geralt. I got to inject a bit more intellect and a bit more thoughtfulness."
The clip also shows a ton of new and returning characters, as well as a warning from Jaskier actor Joey Batey.
"It's the first time we are actually facing death, and it's going to take a huge sacrifice to try and get through it," Batey warned.
As previously mentioned, The Witcher Season 3 Volume 1's five episodes will arrive on Netflix on June 29 and Volume 2's final three episodes will become available on July 27. These episodes will mark the end of Cavill's run as Geralt of Rivia, as Liam Hemsworth will be replacing him in Season 4 and beyond.
