Princess Leia's dress from the final scene in Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope is up for auction and expected to sell for as much as $2 million.
As reported by The New York Times, the dress was recently uncovered from an attic in London after it was thought lost for more than 40 years, and spent eight months being restored to its on-screen condition.
While Leia, played by the late Carrie Fisher, donned myriad iconic outfits in the original film, this was worn during the Royal Award Ceremony where she handed out medals to Luke Skywalker and Han Solo for their efforts in destroying the Death Star.
"It’s incredibly important because it’s literally the last thing that you see in the original Star Wars film," said Propstore Auction chief operating officer Brandon Alinger. "I think if you’re a Star Wars fan, you look at it and it just gels for you."
The dress was originally thought to be discarded following the filming of A New Hope, as "there was not a great focus on saving this material when that first movie was made", Alinger added. "When we first saw it, it was in something of a poor state."
After months of "painstaking work" from textile conservators, who removed dust and dirt and restitched open seams, the dress now looks just as it did in 1977. The dress is currently sitting at $750,000 with bidding due to end June 28.
Fisher passed away in December 2016 between the filming of Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi and Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker, though unused footage was used to create scenes for the latter.
