Netflix recently announced it is bringing James Cameron's 1997 film Titanic back to its service on July 1. But amid the recent events involving OceanGate, some argue it's too soon.
The backlash is in response to the recent tragedy pertaining to OceanGate's submarine, Titan, which imploded during a voyage to the wreckage of the Titanic ship. All five people aboard the submersible, including OceanGate founder and CEO Stockton Rush, died in the accident.
However, as The Hollywood Reporter pointed out, Titanic's return to Netflix was not an impulse decision made by the streaming giant. It was reported that Titanic was coming to the service before the OceanGate tragedy occurred. Fan site NetflixLife, for example, published a list of films coming to Netflix in July 2023; among them was Titanic, and if you look at the publishing date, you will see it went live two weeks before the Titan went missing.
Of course, if you want to watch Titanic now and don't want to wait, the movie is streaming on Prime Video and Paramount+, at the moment (provided that you live in the United States).
