The next Ghostbusters film will see Ghostbusters: Afterlife's writer and executive producer Gil Kenan replacing Jason Reitman as director.
As reported by Deadline, Reitman will move to a writer-producer role alongside Kenan and Jason Blumenfeld. Furthermore, it looks as though Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon are already on board to return for this new adventure.
The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set to be released in theaters on December 20, 2023, and will take our heroes back to the franchise's home of New York City and that iconic firehouse.
“A few years ago, my father handed me the keys to Ecto-1, and together we made Ghostbusters: Afterlife” said Reitman. “Words will never express how grateful I am to have made a film with my father by my side. It’s now time to hand those keys to my creative partner and fellow Ghostbuster Gil Kenan, a brilliant director who will keep the Spengler spirit alive. I can only hope to provide him the same producorial care and support that my father showed me.”
Kenan has been in the director's chair before for such projects as A Boy Called Christmas, Monster House, City of Ember, Poltergeist, and an episode of Scream: The TV Series.
In our Ghostbusters: Afterlife review, we said, "director Jason Reitman does his father and fans proud with a funny, sweet, and spooky family movie that proudly takes on the legacy of Ghostbusters, while also introducing something exciting and new."
Ghostbusters fans are living in a great time as Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed was just released, and a Ghostbusters VR game and a Ghostbusters animated series from Netflix are currently in the works.
