DC Bosses Reportedly Considering Making Matt Reeves' Batman Part of the Wider DCU

DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are reportedly considering making Matt Reeves' The Batman franchise part of the wider DCU.

A well placed source informed Variety of the potential blending of universes, that would see Robert Pattinson's Batman share a universe with other DC characters like Superman across films, games, and more.

Gunn and Safran's master plan is still up in the air, however, meaning nothing has been confirmed yet, and it's also still unclear exactly which actors will make the cut in the new DCU. Even the likes of Henry Cavill, who recently reprised his role of Superman in the DCEU, is unconfirmed to be returning after reports emerged around the scrapping of Man of Steel 2.

Cavill's character is still a priority for DC Studios though, with Gunn saying earlier in December that "Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority" for the new DCU.

The old universe's version of Batman is likely out the window, however, which leaves the Caped Crusader's spot open - and potentially for Pattinson. The Batman was released in March 2022 to tremendous critical acclaim, and a sequel and several spin-off shows are already in development.

One of these series is confirmed to be focused on Colin Farrell's Penguin but details around the others are still hazy. What began as a Gotham PD-centric show evolved into a horror-like series about Arkham, but both concepts are now reportedly in development as different projects.

The cast and crew of The Batman have also shared what they'd like to explore in the full sequel. Pattinson himself wans to take on the Court of Owls saga while director Matt Reeves hopes to bring Mr. Freeze to his dark and gritty Batman universe.

These could just be the beginning of a much larger universe though (which perhaps make the universe a good starting point for a larger DCU project) as Reeves is reportedly in talks with other directors and writers to create films based on Batman villains including Scarecrow, Clayface, and Professor Pyg.

In our 10/10 review of the original, IGN said: "Matt Reeves’ violent, thrilling, darkly beautiful take on The Batman more than justifies its place in the franchise’s canon."
