The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is officially coming to Peacock on July 30. The streaming release date is now visible in a section of the Peacock website dedicated to Illumination’s Mario sequel.
The sequel currently stands as the highest grossing movie of the year, and is the first and only 2026 release so far to have crossed over $1 billion at the box office.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was released on April 1 and became available digitally after a full 45-day window in theaters. It was also released on Blu-ray in mid-June.
At the time of writing, the film has grossed over $429 million domestically and just over $1 billion worldwide. Having left theaters earlier this month, it did not manage to match the $1.3 billion accrued by the first movie, which is also streaming on Peacock, back in 2019.
IGN’s 6/10 review highlights, but criticizes a weaker narrative core. Shigeru Miyamoto himself actually responded to the less than enthusiastic response to the sequel, at least compared to the praise heaped on the first movie, saying, “I thought the critics' reviews of the first film were understandable. But I thought this time it would be different... and it was even harsher than last time, which I found strange (laughs).”
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie introduced new cast and characters, most notably Anya Taylor-Joy as Rosalina, who happened to get a new and now canon back-story, and Donald Glover as Yoshi. The film also debuted Glenn Powell as Star Fox, a reveal that happened just before the film’s premiere and kicked off a Star Fox summer that culminated in a Star Fox 64 remake launching on Switch 2.
There hasn’t been any official announcement about the next collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination, but Universal did add a theoretical project with both studios to its 2028 release calendar. Some rumors are hinting at a dedicated Donkey Kong movie, while Jack Black has suggested he’s already signed on for a third Mario.
The next Nintendo movie, however, won’t involve Illumination - the live-action Zelda movie produced in collaboration with Sony Pictures is slated for release on April 30, 2027
In the meantime, Illumination has another big 2026 release. Minions and Monsters, the third dedicated Minions movie in the Despicable Me franchise, was just released in theaters. The movie is already picking up heaps of praise, with IGN’s 8/10 review claiming it “uses those little banana-loving dudes to make an ode to early Hollywood and to the power of cinema and storytelling.” It currently sits at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest-ever rating for the animation studio.
