Ubisoft's excellent Assassin's Creed Odyssey is enjoying a big spike in active players, following the launch of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.
Nolan's Ancient Greek blockbuster is on track to make a billion dollars at the box office, and has clearly sparked further interest in its setting. Indeed, engagement statistics published by Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliot show that the film's launch has also driven thousands of players back to Ubisoft's 2018 epic.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey has nearly doubled its active userbase over the past week across a combination of PlayStation, Xbox and PC via Steam. Xbox engagement was particularly strong, up from 36,000 to 84,000 daily active users, a leap of 134%.
In what seems to be a canny move, Ubisoft currently has Assassin's Creed Odyssey available via Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus — allowing The Odyssey fans who own a console subscription to boot up the game without any additional charge.
"Software sales moved modestly at around 400,000 copies year-to-date, but the real [benefit] here is pure player engagement," Elliot wrote, going on to suggest the figures bode well for a future Odyssey remake akin to the recently-launched Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.
"The film didn't make millions buy an eight-year-old game, but it got a massive cohort playing it again," Elliot continued. "That data gives Ubisoft great ammunition for an eventual AC Odyssey Resynced.
"Credit to Ubisoft for leaning into the momentum. They ran timed social campaigns alongside Nolan’s release and resurfaced Discovery Tour (the guided, combat-free educational mode), positioning it as an interactive companion piece for anyone falling down a history rabbit hole after leaving the cinema."

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is an epic, standout entry in Ubisoft's long-lived historical adventure series, and one that's well worth experiencing (or revisiting, if you played it back in the day). It features an enormous world to explore, filled with a sprawling set of stories taking in the setting's historical characters, myths and legends. Odyssey also saw the series leaning its furthest into full RPG territory, to the delight of many (though the chagrin of others who preferred the franchise in its more humbler rooftop-set origins).
With more than 10 million copies sold during its first two years, Odyssey remains one of the most successful entries in the Assassin's Creed series, while its protagonist Kassandra continues to be one of its most popular, and one of the few to pop up again in subsequent games.
Just don't expect the events of either The Odyssey or Assassin's Creed Odyssey to overlap. While some elements will be familiar, the former is set around 800 years before — although it clearly inspired Ubisoft's game. Both stories follow an outcast navigating the Greek islands on a ship, battling armies and other monstrous forces as they attempt to reclaim their family. Not played Assassin's Creed Odyssey yet?
