DC Studios Reportedly Greenlights Standalone Clayface Film Written by Horror Specialist Mike Flanagan

DC Studios has reportedly given the go-ahead to a Clayface movie based on a script by horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan.

Clayface is one of Batman's oldest foes. The first iteration of the character, Basil Karlo, first appeared in Detective Comics #40 (1940). There have been a number of versions of Clayface; the original, re-emergent, and ultimate incarnation, is a failed actor named Basil Karlo.

Variety reports that the greenlight was awarded following the success of HBO’s The Penguin TV show, with filming set to kick off early 2025. The Batman director Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris will produce via their 6th & Idaho Productions.

Mike Flanagan, who created Netflix horror shows The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of Usher, said in 2021 that he wanted to make a Clayface movie as a “horror/thriller/tragedy,” but due to other commitments (The Exorcist, Carrie) DC Studios needs a director for the project.

Deadline has reported that Flanagan’s Clayface is not a villain and is a “big addition” to Reeves’ upcoming The Batman 2, but it's not clear if this version of the character connects the Batman Epic Crime Saga to DC’s Gods and Monsters – Chapter One.

Firefly star Alan Tudyk voices Clayface in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU opener Creature Commandos, and maybe even in next year’s Superman movie. Gunn has already said he wants DCU actors playing the same roles across multiple projects (Clayface can shape shift his appearance to anyone.)

Superman otherwise stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, María Gabriela as The Engineer, and more.
