Horror anime fans got perhaps the biggest scare of all in Episode 2 of Uzumaki due to a massive drop off in animation quality.
The internet exploded today with clips from the second of four episodes of Uzumaki, an adaptation of the 1998 manga from famed horror writer Junji Ito. It tells the tale of a town called Kurouzu-cho as it is overcome with a bizarre and horrific curse involving spirals.

But today anime fans were spiralling out of control due to how rough the second episode looks, with segments appearing as if Uzumaki was still months away from being released. This is a sharp downturn from the animation seen in the highly anticipated anime's trailers and its first episode, which was released to praise from fans and critics.
"Uzumaki’s premiere is not only a great companion piece to the original manga, but a fun watch in its own right," IGN said in our 8/10 review of the premiere. "Though slightly reduced in scope and unable to give itself room to breathe, it’s a greatest-hits of a widely loved manga that lives up to immeasurable expectations."

What makes the apparent bait and switch more painful for fans is that Ito, perhaps the most famous horror manga artist of all time, has never seen his work adapted to anime with much success. Both of his previous works, the Junji Ito Collection and Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre were very poorly received by fans.
Uzumaki has also been years in the making, having been announced way back in 2019. The show appeared to suffer myriad development issues, perhaps leading to the issues prevalent in Episode 2, and was originally due out in 2022.
