After seven years away, Daniel Day-Lewis is officially returning to acting.
Focus Features and Plan B Entertaiment announced on Tuesday that Day-Lewis will be starring in Anemone, which will also see his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, making his feature directorial debut. The father/son duo also co-wrote the script, which "explores the intricate relationships between fathers, sons and brothers, and the dynamics of familial bonds," per Focus' official logline.
Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green will also star.
Anemone marks Daniel Day-Lewis' first role since Phantom Thread in 2017, which is the same year that he made the shocking announcement that he would be quitting acting: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor," his spokesperson said at the time. "He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject."
Since then, the Oscar-winner has indeed stayed away from acting and out of the public eye altogether. Still, Martin Scorsese, who famously directed Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York, previously teased doing "one more" film with the previously retired actor.
Rumors had started to emerge that Day-Lewis would be returning to the screen earlier on Tuesday, with the Daily Mail publishing paparazzi photos seemingly showing him on a set with Bean.
Among his many accolades, Daniel Day-Lewis has won Academy Awards for his roles in My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln. Ronan Day-Lewis, meanwhile, is an accomplished painter, and his debut international solo exhibition opens on October 2 in Hong Kong.
