The Babadook: IFC to Re-Release the Acclaimed Horror Film for Its 10th Anniversary

IGN can exclusively reveal that IFC Films will re-release the indie horror sensation The Babadook in theaters nationwide starting September 19th in honor of the film’s 10th anniversary. You can see the re-release’s new trailer and poster below.

The re-release will also include an exclusive Q&A with writer/director Jennifer Kent. Kent's breakthrough film follows a single mother, plagued by the violent death of her husband, as she battles with her son's fear of a monster lurking in the house, but soon discovers a sinister presence all around her.

We’ve long big fans of The Babadook here at IGN. In our The Babadook review from 2014, IGN critic Daniel Krupa called it “a brilliantly made, elegant horror film, with real psychological depth. It's also a celebration of a school of horror that's been dormant for much too long.”

Krupa continued, “Despite some of the trailers implying an out-and-out monster movie, The Babadook belongs firmly to a genre that understands the power of restraint and terror of the unseen. There are definite shades of The Haunting and The Innocents, but it stands proudly in its own right. This is modern psychological horror at its most rich, macabre, and moving.”

IGN went on to include The Babadook among the Top 25 horror films of all time and the 31 best modern horror movies. The Babadook itself is ranked 31st on our list of the best horror movie villains. Kent's film is also among our sister site Cinefix’s Top 100 movies of all time.

Since helming The Babadook, Jennifer Kent has gone on to direct The Nightingale as well as an episode of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. Kent told IGN at this year’s Sundance Film Festival that she's currently writing "a supernatural horror series set in Ireland in the 1700s."
