Jujutsu Kaisen Ends In September 2024

Jujutsu Kaisen will finally close its domain expansion once and for all on September 30.

Shonen Jump announced Jujutsu Kaisen’s conclusion during the latter half of a YouTube livestream on Monday. Creator Gege Akutami hinted toward the series’ imminent end in December during Jump Festa '24. In a written statement, the mangaka wrote: “This will probably definitely be the last Jump Festa where Jujutsu Kaisen is still in serialization,” according to Anime News Network.

Shonen Jump’s announcement news echoes a similar announcement from My Hero Academia creator Kohei Horikoshi, whose manga concluded on August 4 — signaling the end of an era for popular shonen battle manga. Unlike My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen’s conclusion is coupled with anxiety among its readership that the sorcerer-fighting manga can wrap up its various story threads and off-screen battles conclusively in five 19-page chapters.

Jujutsu Kaisen began serialization in March 2018 and was adapted into an anime in October 2020. Both seasons of its anime also won the Crunchyroll Anime of the Year Award in 2020 and 2023. The anime, produced by Studio Mappa, is gearing up for its third season, which will adapt the manga's third major arc, the Culling Game.

During its publication, the manga earned worldwide acclaim that stretched beyond the confines of the anime community. Key among them are references during the 2024 Paris Olympics, a spoiler-filled cosplay from Usher, and a richly referential song from Megan Thee Stallion’s latest album, Otaku Hot Girl.

Coupled with Jujutsu Kaisen’s finale was the announcement of the Jump Next Gen Battle Manga award, which features illustrations of protagonists from Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, Black Clover, and Bleach by Horikoshi. The award will be judged by creators Akutami, Horikoshi, Yuki Tabata, and Tite Kubo. The competition winner will have their future series recommended by the judges and have their winning work published in the digital version of Weekly Shonen Jump.

In our 6/10 Season 2 review, we wrote: “Jujutsu Kaisen offers plenty of spectacle, but little else during the Shibuya Incident Arc.”
