Deadpool & Wolverine Director Shawn Levy Still Developing a Star Wars Film

Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is still developing his Star Wars film but it seems unlikely to release any time soon.

Speaking to Deadline, Levy confirmed he was still working on the project but wasn't wholly confident it would definitely be made.

"I am still developing my Star Wars movie and I would love to make it some day. I have an idea that I'm excited about," he said. "Development is slow going and developing something with that amount of mythology scaffolding, it takes time.

"You've gotta be aware of, 'okay well wait, what are they doing over here, what's that group doing over here,' right? Because they have television, they have films. But some really exciting conversations with [Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy] and [executive vice president and chief creative officer] Dave Filoni and the group over at Lucas."

Levy's comments echo those from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold, who's also working on a Star Wars film. Mangold said he doesn't want his project to be weighed by ever-expanding lore.

Beyond just films and TV shows, Star Wars canon also includes dozens of books and comics, several video games, audio books, and more that film creators have to be aware of.

Regardless, Levy sounds determined to create his Star Wars film eventually. "I don't know, man. I'm trying to prerserve some dreams," he said. "And that's definitely one of them that's out there in my future, and I hope to not rest until I get there."

Lucasfilm owner Disney will certainly be eager to have Levy create a Star Wars film if the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-starring Deadpool & Wolverine proves a box office hit when it premieres on July 26, 2024, and the Marvel owner is reportedly already considering him as director of the next Avengers.

That project, set to release on May 1, 2026, would likely push his Star Wars film back even further, and it's already gone through ups and downs as the actor and writer strikes of 2023 pressed pause on production.

Disney has plenty of Star Wars movies coming up already though. Fans went a long time without any concrete release dates but it's now confirmed The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the next Star Wars film and hit cinemas on May 22, 2026.

December 18, 2026 and December 17, 2027 are also locked in as the two subsequent film premiere dates, but it's unclear which of Disney's roster will fill those slots. The most likely candidate is perhaps the Daisy Ridley led film from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, however, in which Rey looks to rebuild the Jedi Order 15 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker.

Other possibilities include Mangold's film focused on the dawn of the Force or another set to be a culmination of Star Wars shows like Ahsoka and The Mandalorian from Lucasfilm's chief creative officer Dave Filoni.

Thor Ragnarok and Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi is also working on a Star Wars film, though its progress is slow and steady as it's not expected until around 2030. Star Wars: Episode 8 - The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson also has an entire trilogy of films announced, but these aren't in active development either.

Finally, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins had a Rogue Squadron movie announced before it was cancelled due to her commitments to Wonder Woman 3. But as that film was cancelled itself, Jenkins revealed she still owed Disney a Star Wars script and thus sparked hope that Rogue Squadron was back in development.
