Upcoming Star Wars series The Acolyte will break the trend of recent cinematic universe offerings by not featuring cameos from other films and TV shows.
Speaking to Comic Book, showrunner Leslye Headland made clear her show is free from connections to other Star Wars films and TV shows despite taking place in the same universe. This comes as a stark difference to the likes of Ahsoka, which premiered in 2023 despite weaving in storylines from a dozen other seasons of TV.
When asked if The Acolyte — set during the High Republic era so far only featured in books and comics and around 100 years before Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace — would feature major cameos of characters such as Yoda, who was alive at the time, Headland gave a definitive answer.
"Can you image? Can you imagine if they were like, 'no problem, you can use Yoda. Not a big deal.'," she laughed. "No there is not. We are pulling characters from The High Republic and characters from Extended Universe, but that's it."
The Extended Universe is the Star Wars canon Disney scrapped after purchasing the franchise, though certain elements have seeped back in through various books, TV shows, films, and so on. As for the High Republic characters, only a small handful are set to be featured in the show as The Acolyte itself is set decades after the main saga of the books.
Its lack of pulling from the past doesn't necessarily mean The Acolyte won't expand into more than one season itself, however, as Headland previously told IGN she could "absolutely" grow it in the future. Star Wars fans still have the first season to enjoy before that, of course, and can do so when the first two episodes premiere on Disney+ on June 4.
