Godzilla Minus One Extends and Expands Its U.S. Theatrical Run

Godzilla Minus One is extending its U.S. theatrical run, giving people more time to schedule a date to see the legendary kaiju on the big screen.

The official X/Twitter account for Toho's Godzilla Minus One announced that the King of Monsters would be running rampant in select theaters for a little longer, with the film's limited run now being extended to include over 2,500 locations in the U.S. and Canada starting December 8 through to (at least) December 14.

Godzilla Minus One is the first live-action Godzilla movie from Japanese production and distribution company Toho since 2016. It takes Godzilla back to the character's post-WWII origin as the monster strikes out on a roaring rampage of destruction and devastation in Japan, plunging the country from "zero to minus."

The romp-and-stomp movie, written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, premiered in Japan on November 3 — exactly one year from when Toho first announced the feature — and received a theatrical release in the United States on December 1, with many moviegoers heralding it as one of the best Godzilla entries in years.

Godzilla Minus One grossed over $11 million during its U.S. debut over the weekend, giving it the all-time highest opening for a live-action Japanese movie in U.S. theaters. The latest Godzilla film also surpassed $34.6 million at the worldwide box office alongside widespread critcial acclaim, with Rotten Tomatoes scores exceeding 90%.

IGN's review of Godzilla Minus One awarded the film 8 out of 10 stars, feeling that it's "even bigger than its title character" and more "hopeful" than Shin Godzilla with extra "swell, in the score and on the heart strings; less terror and more pride, even (or perhaps especially) while evoking a vulnerable period in Japan's history."
