It's been seven years since the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and in those years, various rumors have spread about its production. Director Gareth Edwards, however, is finally addressing them, saying "there is so much inaccuracy" about what was said.
Rogue One's production has been well-documented and speculated on, especially when it comes to the weeks of reshoots that took place, and how Lucasfilm brought on Tony Gilroy as a writer in June 2016. It was rumored that Gilroy - who would go on to create the acclaimed Rogue One prequel series Andor - basically served as the uncredited director of Rogue One, even though Edwards holds the sole director credit.
In a new interview with KCRW's The Business, Edwards, who recently released his latest film The Creator, pushed back on these claims.
"The stuff that is out there on the internet about what happened on that film — there is so much inaccuracy about the whole thing," Edwards said. "Tony came in, and he did a lot of great work, for sure. No doubt about it. But we all worked together until the last minute of that movie."
Edwards explained that the reshoots for Rogue One took five weeks, and he was there for all of them: "The very last thing that we filmed in the pickup shoot was the Darth Vader corridor scene. I did all of that stuff."
Despite the rumors, Edwards added that he still looks back fondly at his time with Lucasfilm.
"Someone who gets that opportunity to make a Star Wars film and then starts complaining about it, I don't think many people have that much empathy for that kind of person. I so don't want to be them. It was a dream come true. I'm proud of the movie we all made," Edwards said. "What goes into Fight Club stays in Fight Club kind of thing. It's like that. I just want to sound grateful for what happened and not talk negatively about anything."
