Rick Riordan Says Latest Percy Jackson Book Could Become Part One of a Trilogy

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is back in full force as, alongside the Disney+ adaptation premiering in December, the novels' return with The Chalice of the Gods could kick off a new trilogy.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, original author Rick Riordan said the latest book, released September 26 as the first entry in 14 years, was pitched to studios as a trilogy.

"That is originally the way that I pitched it to the studios and to my editor," Riordan said. "Those other ideas are out there. They are outlined. Really, it's just a matter of what timing makes sense, and what does my schedule look like in terms of the producing of the TV show and all the other projects we have going on? The ideas are out there and so we'll have to see how that unfolds."

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Chalice of the Gods certainly sets up a trilogy in its story, with the titular character having to secure three recommendation letters for a godly university but only acquiring the first within its pages.

While Riordan released a sequel series to Percy Jackson and the Olympians that featured the same characters and continued to 2014, this new entry is specifically a continuation of the original Percy Jackson and the Olympians series which ended in 2009 with The Last Olympian.

Its announcement came in 2022, just one month after Disney released the first trailer for its new Percy Jackson and the Olympians adaptation. The series was first announced in 2020 but is almost here, hitting Disney+ on December 20. It goes back to the beginning, retelling the events of the first Percy Jackson and the Olympians book: The Lightning Thief.

Another teaser trailer and poster was also released earlier in September, showing Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson alongside Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood.
