Star Wars' John Boyega Prefers The Rise of Skywalker to The Last Jedi

John Boyega, who played Finn in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, has revealed he prefers Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker to Episode 8: The Last Jedi.

Appearing on First We Feast's Truth or Dab: Rapid Fire (below), Boyega was asked to rank the Star Wars films he's appeared in, and while Episode 7: The Force Awakens was an easy winner, he seemingly thinks less of the latter two Sequel Trilogy films.

"The Force Awakens is most definitely the best," Boyega said. "Second for me comes Star Wars 9, and then the worst, in the most respectful sense, is Episode 8." He added that "they're all lovely", though not without a sarcastic side glance away from the camera.

Boyega has made clear his frustration with the Sequel Trilogy in the past, being vocal about how his character as a black man was sidelined in favour of the series' white characters. “They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley,” he said in 2020. “Let's be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. I'm not exposing anything.”

While his potential return to Star Wars was seemingly a cut and dried no for many years, however, Boyega once again seems open to the idea. Boyega was asked by TechRadar earlier in July if he'd be open to coming back, and his answer has Star Wars fans excited.

"[The comments I made were] a few years ago, so they were the subject of that particular project," he said of his criticism. "But I'm open to all characters and scripts that are enjoyable, have a great cast attached, and a terrific director. So yeah, I'm open to all opportunities."

"I'm open to all characters and scripts that are enjoyable, have a great cast attached, and a terrific director. So yeah, I'm open to all opportunities."

This comes at a particularly speculative time for his character as, spoilers for the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy ahead, Finn's awakening as a Jedi was cut short in The Rise of Skywalker.

Ridley is confirmed to be leading a new movie about rebuilding the Jedi Order, so many fans hope Finn will finally get his chance to be a Jedi alongside her. This is also a storyline Disney has used already in the officially unofficial Star Wars LEGO specials.

His openness to coming back will therefore likely spur speculation and excitement, though any casting announcements are likely still far, far away. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told IGN in April that the film is "pretty far along" in development, though a recent delay already saw the next Star Wars film pushed to 2026 and the ongoing strikes in Hollywood could cause further upheaval.

Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He'll talk about The Witcher all day.
