Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu has given a disappointing update about the upcoming sequel.
During an AMA on Threads, the Marvel star confirmed Shang-Chi 2 won’t head to the big screen anytime soon. “Was told it would follow Avengers,” he said. “But that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control. Hope to have more concrete news to share soon.”
The Avengers he mentioned is thought to be Avengers: Kang Dynasty, the next big Avengers movie.
However, that film has seemingly hit a bit of a snag. Following claims of abuse and toxic behavior from Kang star Jonathan Majors, it’s unclear how Marvel intends to push forward with the upcoming Avengers flick. After all, in its earlier guise, the Avengers film would focus largely on Majors’ supervillain.
Jeff Loveness is on scriptwriting duties for Kang Dynasty, and director Destin Daniel Cretton will direct the movie. Cretton previously directed Shang-Chi and has been confirmed to write and direct the upcoming sequel.
However, while work had already begun on Shang-Chi 2, it’s unclear how it will now forward, especially with Kang Dynasty’s fate up in the air.
“Going into a sequel feels exciting,” said Liu in an interview earlier this year. “We're getting to revisit some things, but also show the viewer new things. We'll deliver all of the amazing action that we were celebrated for on the first movie, but then also hopefully explore new sides of Shaun's character and the characters around him. That is, of course, if we can still afford Michelle Yeoh. She's on top of the world and just the queen of everything.”
IGN’s Shang-Chi review gave it 8/10 and said: “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a confident introduction to Marvel’s first Asian superhero, delivering the MCU’s best fight choreography and one of its most emotionally complex villains.”
