Kit Harrington Says He Was Never Meant to Be In Marvel's Blade

Kit Harrington has claimed he was never supposed to be in Blade following his appearance in Marvel’s Eternals.

Appearing at Superhero Comic Con in San Antonio, Harrington confirmed his character was being lined up to take up the sword and become the Black Knight.

“The honest answer is I think that's the intention with the character,” he said. However, he also confirmed that he won’t be back in Marvel’s upcoming Blade, despite signs that he would be.

“I was never... I think there was some misunderstanding about whether he was going to be in the Blade movie,” he said. “He was never meant to be in the Blade movie and isn’t.”

Harrington starred as Dane Whitman in Eternals, essentially the love interest of Gemma Chan’s super-powered Eternal, Sersi, who was spirited away by Arishem along with several other Eternals at the end of the movie. However, Eternals also teased Whitman’s transformation into the Black Knight in a post-credit scene.

There, Whitman was seen opening a box containing the Ebony Blade, but was stopped before he could pick it up by an unseen voice that says: “Are you sure you’re ready for that?”

The voice was Mahershala Ali in his new role as Blade, the half-vampire vampire hunter who’s getting a solo film as part of the MCU’s future slate. Unfortunately, the film has been put on hold, at least, for now. And Harrington is unsure when Whitman will return.

“At this stage, I don’t know,” he said. “At this stage, I hope he gets used. I think there’s some really fascinating parts of that character which would be beneficial to delve into and interesting, which is the aspects around his mental health things and specifically about addiction with that character which I think is really interesting.”

“I hope they use him,” he added. “I hope that the Black Knight comes along. I hope that Dane Whitman is that character. At this stage, I can’t tell you anything. But I think the intention is to develop him at some point.”

IGN’s Eternals review gave it 7/10 and said: “Eternals is huge. Centuries worth of stories and a whole team of vastly different heroes are condensed into a visually stunning and impeccably acted film… Director Chloé Zhao was met with an impossible challenge that she took on with grace, skill, and her trademark jaw-dropping scenery.”
