Dungeons & Dragons Movie Sequel Could Happen on a Lower Budget, Says Paramount Boss

A Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves sequel could still potentially happen, though it would have to be on a lower budget after the poor commercial performance of the first movie.

Speaking with Variety, Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins suggested a Dungeons & Dragons movie sequel is still on the table. However, he acknowledged its budget would need to be a reduction on the $150 million spent on Honor Among Thieves. "We've got to figure out a way to make it for less," he said.

Honor Among Thieves underperformed at the box office after grossing a little over $200 million worldwide, despite receiving mostly positive reviews from critics and fans. The movie received a 90% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, while over 2,500 fan ratings placed the movie's audience score at 93%.

The team at Wizards of the Coast suggested the movie's commercial shortcomings may have come from the lessened importance of theaters over time and anticipated its digital release could give the feature a much-needed financial boost, though no further updates on a potential sequel followed after that.

The lack of word from Paramount on a Dungeons & Dragons sequel hasn't stopped writing/directing duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley from considering where it could go. Specifically, the second movie could see the core group exploring new monster-riddled locations, where Chris Pine's bard Edgin may finally use magic.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves arrived in theatres on March 31, 2023, and became available to stream on Paramount+ in May. IGN's review of the tabletop-inspired movie called it "an accessible fantasy adventure that both roasts and respects D&D culture without losing newcomers along for the ride".

Whether a sequel gets made remains to be seen, especially since Paramount already has another Dungeons & Dragons project in the works by way of a serialized adaptation of the classic fantasy RPG board game. This live-action series is still likely years away, but the expansion of the franchise will no doubt delight fans.
