Tom Holland is taking a break from acting after his apparently pretty grueling role on his new Apple TV+ series.
Holland opened up about the experience in a new interview with Extra, admitting that filming The Crowded Room made for “a tough time.” In the psychological thriller, Holland plays a man named Danny Sullivan (a character based on Billy Milligan), who’s arrested for a shocking crime and whose life is investigated through a series of interviews. Holland’s also an executive producer on The Crowded Room.
“We were exploring certain emotions that I had certainly never experienced before,” he said. “On top of that, being a producer, dealing with the day-to-day kind of problems that come with any film set, just added that extra level of pressure.”
While he said he ultimately enjoyed the new challenge of producing, it was undeniably a taxing role.
“I really enjoyed it, but then again, the show did break me,” he went on. “There did come a time where I was like, ‘I need a break.’ I disappeared, I went to Mexico for a week and had some time on a beach and laid low. And I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult the show was.”
It’s true that Holland’s acting slate is pretty clear for the next few years. The only projects on the docket include a Fred Astaire biopic, and it’s unclear where that movie is in development currently, and Spider-Man 4, which likely won’t start filming for quite some time. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige said in February that his writers had just starting to put pen to paper on the sequel, and Holland confirmed just last week that development was paused “in solidarity” with the ongoing writers’ strike.
The Crowded Room premieres on Apple TV+ with three episodes this Friday.
