DC Studios finally unveiled its new cinematic universe's leading man, with David Corenswet confirmed to play the Man of Steel in Superman: Legacy, and the internet actually seems pleased about it.
Announced alongside Rachel Brosnahan's casting as Lois Lane, Corenswet as Superman sparked a largely positive reaction despite the Pearl star replacing the internet's sweetheart Henry Cavill in the role.
Replies to DC Studios' co-CEO and Superman: Legacy director James Gunn's tweet about the casting were full of praise. "Great casting," said one user. "It's a great choice," said another.
Fans on Reddit voiced their excitement too. "This was always the top tier combo. Hard not to be excited at this point," said btm29. "Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane is perfection," added g88glueser.
Other fans just felt hopeful and excited for a new era of DC films. "I really hope that a lot of the DC community can come together and really rally behind these two," said one. "I truly think they're going to be the foundation of something really special with the DCU. Can't wait to hear the rest of the cast."
Superman: Legacy is due to premiere on July 11, 2025, and will tell the story of a young Superman as he balances his Kryptonian and Kansan heritage. It will be the first of five films and five TV shows that make up Chapter 1 of the new DCU, titled Gods and Monsters.
Confusion initially surrounded Cavill's involvement after the Man of Steel actor announced his return as Superman alongside the release of Black Adam, but he later revealed he wouldn't be returning after all following Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran's shake-up at DC.
Gunn was confirmed to be writing Superman: Legacy but later revealed he would direct too, though assured that it won't have the "same vibe" as his Marvel superhero offering Guardians of the Galaxy. The film entered pre-production in April, and while details are still slim, Gunn said he's open to making it more mature but is generally aiming for a PG-13 rating.
