Star Wars, Marvel, and Avatar Films Delayed in Massive Disney Reshuffle

Disney has reshuffled its entire film schedule and delayed upcoming Star Wars, Marvel, and Avatar films in the process.

As reported by Variety, the long-awaited 2025 Star Wars film, which was set to be the first silver screen premiere since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, has been pushed to May 22, 2026.

It will be just the first Star Wars film to release that year, however, as Disney has also dated a second Star Wars film for December 18, 2026. Not showing any signs of slowing down, Disney announced a third Star Wars film would be released on December 17, 2027.

Marvel was another victim of the shakeup, with the recently renamed Captain America: Brave New World the first to face a delay, from May 3 to August 2024 next year. Thunderbolts will move to December 20 2024, Blade to February 14 2025, and Fantastic Four to May 2, 2025.

Finally, both Avengers films are also delayed. Kang Dynasty is moving back a year from May 2, 2025 to May 1, 2026. Secret Wars is following suit, moving from May 1, 2026, to May 7, 2027.

James Cameron's infamously delayed Avatar franchise is retreading old ground too. Avatar 3 will now be released on December 19, 2025, Avatar 4 will be released on December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 will be released next decade on December 19, 2031.

Production delays are cited as one reason for the changes, with paused filming on Blade and Thunderbolts (caused by the writers' strike) having ramifications throughout the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The writers' strike is still ongoing and has so far affected a ton of films including fellow MCU project Spider-Man 4.
