Spider-Man Spinoff El Muerto Removed From Sony Release Calendar

Sony has removed the Bad Bunny-led Spider-Man spinoff El Muerto from its release schedule, dropping it from its former January 2024 slot.

El Muerto, which had Jonás Cuaron in the director's chair, was previously scheduled to hit theaters on January 12, 2024, but the film has lost its release date amid Sony's recent calendar changes. Rather than getting a new date, the movie's release is now labelled "TBD".

According to Deadline, the Spider-Man spinoff is still in development but had its schedule impacted by the ongoing WGA strike and complications surrounding Bad Bunny's touring dates. These two factors have made it difficult to finalize a release window.

Bad Bunny is the stage name for Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, a Puerto Rican musician, producer, actor, and professional wrestler. He joined El Muerto in April 2022 when he signed on as Marvel's first live-action Latino lead, but as of April 2023, filming had still not begun.

In the comics, El Muerto (real name Juan-Carlos Estrada Sánchez) is the son of a luchador who finds out he will inherit a mystical wrestling mask that will imbue him with superhuman strength and endurance to go up against gods and men as a professional wrestler.

The character's solo antihero film was not the only movie to see a change on Sony's release calendar. Dumb Money, the GameStop stocks movie starring Paul Dano, will now arrive on September 22, 2023, and Jeymes Samuel's The Book of Clarence is in El Muerto's January slot.
