Zack Snyder’s Twilight of the Gods Will Be Animated by Chip ’n’ Dale Studio

Netflix has announced that Zack Snyder’s upcoming Norse mythology show, Twilight of the Gods, will be produced by Xilam Animation, the French studio behind recent Disney+ show Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life.

Twilight of the Gods is a 2D animated action series created and executive produced by Zack Snyder, who also directs two episodes of the series. A launch date has yet to be confirmed, but Xilam Animation has now been announced as the studio currently at work on the project.

“We’re so proud to be working with the team at Stone Quarry, including iconic creator and director Zack Snyder,” said Marc du Pontavice, Founder and CEO at Xilam Animation. “And we’re also deeply grateful to Netflix for trusting us to bring his spectacular vision to life. We’ll be utilising state of the art 2D animation across the series, which will include spectacular battles and special effects in the distinctive style that has characterised Zack’s work throughout his illustrious career. This project also marks a significant step forward in our ambitions to bring our expertise into the world of adult action series for global audiences.”

Xilam will be better known to French audiences as much of its portfolio is made up of French language cartoons. However, in recent years the Academy Award-nominated animation house has branched out with international projects, including a new upcoming Tom and Jerry show - Hurry, Hurry, Tom and Jerry - being made in collaboration with Warner Bros, and the recent Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life for Disney+. The studio has worked with Netflix previously on children’s shows Oggy Oggy and Oggy and the Cockroaches, but their work in the adult realm comes via I Lost My Body, an art house fantasy movie that was nominated for best animated feature at the 92nd Oscars.

Twilight of the Gods was announced back in 2019, and in 2021 an impressive cast was announced including John Noble as Odin, Paterson Joseph as Loki, and Game of Thrones’ Kristopher Hivju as Andvari. No images of the show have yet to be revealed, so it’s currently unclear as to if this will have an anime-like style akin to Netflix’s other mythology animation Blood of Zeus, or if Xilam are leaning in another stylistic direction.

As for what else Zack Snyder is up to, he recently explained his theory behind the ‘Knightmare’ epilogue for Justice League. He’s currently working on Rebel Moon for Netflix, which will have its own video game adaptation.
