How to Train Your Dragon's live-action remake has found its Hiccup and Astrid in The Black Phone's Mason Thames and The Last of Us' Nico Parker, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline reported today.
The remake was originally announced in February, with director Dean DeBlois (who helmed the entire animated trilogy) attached but no initial word on casting.
Earlier this year, Parker wowed viewers as Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) daughter Sarah in HBO’s acclaimed adaptation of The Last of Us video game (read our breakdown on how she helped make the most of Sarah's short-lived time on the series). She previously starred in Tim Burton’s live-action Dumbo remake, as well as Lisa Joy’s sci-fi thriller Reminiscence.
Thames, meanwhile, made a strong impression in last year's horror movie The Black Phone, with IGN saying in our review that "a lot of attention — and thus, a lot of the praise — will rightfully be for Thames’ stellar performance."
The remake is reportedly shooting this summer. It is expected to hit theaters on March 14, 2025.
Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon trilogy (also helmed by DeBlois) was a bona-fide critical and commercial darling. Combined, the movies boast an impressive $2 billion haul at the box office, while their many accolades include four Oscar nominations and a Golden Globe win.
Based on Cressida Cowell’s beloved book series, the animated films follow young Viking Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), the injured dragon Toothless, and their friend Astrid (America Ferrera) as they forge an unlikely friendship, overcome stacked odds, and teach the close-minded, fear-governed people of Berk to coexist with dragons.
