The Super Mario Bros. Movie Has Exceeded Shigeru Miyamoto's Expectations

Shigeru Miyamoto has said the success of the Super Mario Bros. movie went beyond what he "could have imagined" while talking to the media ahead of the film’s release in Japan.

“I did have a level of expectations that this movie would also do well [like the Super Nintendo World theme park], but I was very surprised that it went beyond what I could have imagined when it finally came out,” said Miyamoto, translated and reported by VGC.

The Super Mario Bros. movie is currently creeping ever closer to $1 billion in global box office earnings after topping the domestic U.S. scene for the third consecutive week.

“You need some luck to achieve this level of success for a film,” continued Miyamoto. “While many foreign critics have given the movie relatively low ratings, I think that also contributed to the movie’s notoriety and buzz. I’d be happy if viewers could say that the definition of what a movie is has changed because of this film. That just shows how lucky we were.”

The Super Mario Bros. movie is now the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, and Miyamoto has already stated publicly that Nintendo is looking beyond a sequel to potentially adapting some of its other IPs.

IGN gave the Mario movie an 8/10, describing it as a “fireball of animated fantasy” that overcame “a Paper Mario-thin plot with undeniable charm and energy”.
