Not only did The Super Mario Bros. Movie win the global weekend box office with an estimated $368 million, but it has officially had the biggest worldwide opening ever for an animated film.
Domestically, The Super Mario Bros. Movie brought in an estimated $137 million over the three-day weekend and $195 million over the five-day stretch that began with the film's release date of Wednesday, April 5. Internationally, its weekend total reached $173 million.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie passed Frozen 2's $358 million to earn the honor of having the biggest worldwide opening ever for an animated film, and it also has had the biggest global opening of 2023 after breaking the $225.3 million record held by Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Domestically, it couldn't quite top The Incredibles 2's opening of $180 million, but it is now comfortably sitting in second place after it swam past Finding Dory's $135.1 million.
For even more facts from the global market, it had the biggest opening for an Illumination film by passing Despicable Me 2's $208 million, it had the biggest video game opening of all time by passing Warcraft's $210 million, and it had the 4th biggest Universal day & date global opening of all time and sits behind Fast & Furious 8's $543 million, Jurassic World's $525 million, and Fast & Furious 7's $398 million.
In North America, The Super Mario Bros. Movie obviously won the weekend box office, and the drop to second place was a big one as ComScore estimates John Wick: Chapter 4 earned $14.6 million in its third week in theaters. It's still an impressive number for the film, but it looks much worse when compared to the massive amount brought in by Mario.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves took third place with $14.5 million, Air placed fourth with $14.46 million, and Scream VI rounded out the top five with $3.315 million.
