BRZRKR: Poetry of Madness Pits Keanu Reeves' Hero Against Lovecraftian Monsters

Keanu Reeves' BRZRKR tells the story of B, an immortal warrior who's spent untold centuries slaughtering his enemies. It goes without saying that no one comic series could hope to chronicle every exploit in B's unnaturally long life, and that's where BRZRKR: Poetry of Madness comes in.

Poetry of Madness isn't just the first BRZRKR spinoff comic, it's also one that pushes the franchise in a wildly different direction. This one-shot special sends B to the mythical city of Atlantis to battle unspeakable monsters straight out of an HP Lovecraft story. The book is written by Reeves and The Matrix storyboard artist Steve Skroce, with Skroce also providing art and Hellboy's Dave Stewart handling colors.

Poetry of Madness appears to be set many thousands of years before the present-day conflict in the main BRZRKR comic. At this point, Atlantis hasn't yet fallen, and B finds himself becoming the city's beloved, monster-slaying protector. However, B soon finds that Atlantis ailing king is a symptom of larger problems within the kingdom. And when an ancient cult threatens Atlantis' very existence, B may find himself confronted with an enemy too great even for him to conquer.

“I loved the original BRZRKR series and I'm thrilled to be helping Keanu craft a tale of high fantasy and adventure in his creation's singular, blood-soaked style," said Skroce in a statement. "It's action horror on a scale you can only get on the comics page.”

BRZRKR: Poetry of Madness #1 is published by BOOM! Studios will hit comic shops and digital storefronts in July 2023.

The main BRZRKR comic recently reached its conclusion in March 2023. That series is also being adapted into a live-action film and a two-season anime series on Netflix. Be sure to check out IGN's interview with Reeves about the appeal of becoming a comic book writer.
