Ant-Man Films Were Always Thought of as a Trilogy, Director Says

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania could be the final solo Ant-Man film as director Peyton Reed has said he always envisioned the series as a trilogy.

In an interview with Lifehacker Australia (and spotted by GameSpot), Reed said he took inspiration from films of his childhood like Star Wars and Back to the Future and imagined creating Ant-Man as his own iconic trilogy.

"I grew up with trilogies: Back to the Future, Star Wars, the Indiana Jones trilogy... So to me, it’s like I treated this like a three act structure of this story," Reed said. "I really thought about [Quantumania] as the trilogy capper."

Reed didn't allude to whether or not he would be open to ever moving past this idea and creating a fourth dedicated Ant-Man film, though the character's story will more than likely be continued in other Marvel Cinematic Universe films going forward.

MCU superheroes Captain America and Iron Man both featured in their own trilogies of films, for example, but their stories were continued in several other films including Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and more.

Those films will likely revolve around more than just Ant-Man, however, so Reed explained how Quantumania will wrap up a more focused story for Scott Lang.

"The third movie in a trilogy is not always the best," he said. "I thought. 'let’s flip this, let’s make this [one] the most epic, but also the most intimate, that deals with things on a grand scale, but really strengthens and broadens those family dynamics and the character.'

Reed added: "There were things in the first movie and the second movie we set up that I really wanted to pay off in this movie — character-wise, environment-wise — and to have it culminate with this encounter with this big villain."

That villain is Kang the Conqueror, the new big bad of the MCU that was teased in the Loki Disney+ series. His arrival in Quantumania kicks off the franchise's Phase 5, a chapter that won't be concluded until the summer of 2024 with Marvel's Thunderbolts.
