M3GAN Sequel Reportedly Already in Development

New horror flick M3GAN is reportedly getting a sequel after a strong performance at the box office.

According to Deadline, “there are already plans” for a sequel, as well as an even gorier, unrated version of the original.

“No shade to Universal, love them, and I understand that once the trailer went viral, teenagers got involved and you want them to be able to see it,” said screenwriter Akela Cooper in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “There should be an unrated version at some point. I heard it is on the books. But yes, it was way gorier. Her body count in the script was higher than in the movie.”

Although the body count was supposedly higher, Cooper insists that it wasn’t a “scale massacre” unlike her previous work, Malignant.

“She did kill a bunch more people, including a couple of characters whom James [Wan] was like, ‘I like what you did with those people, but I want them to live.’ I was merciless, but again, that is me. My humour is extremely dark.”

After a hefty $30.2 million debut, it looks as though M3GAN is making waves, and that seems to have surprised even the film’s writer.

“An exec who read one of my specs and really liked it said, ‘It’s gory and no one’s doing gore right now. We have to wait for a horror movie that has gore to come out and be a hit, and then the market will shift.’ I was sitting there, like, ‘OK … we could lead that charge,'” said Cooper.

“Now I’m [hearing], ‘There’s gore, and it’s not a problem.’ I’m happy that I could have a hand in bringing back fun horror that doesn’t take itself so seriously. I’m reading about more horror movies that are wild, out-there ideas coming out or being bought. And some of them are original, which is good! I’m happy that I could steer that ship so that studio execs can be like, ‘Oh! There might actually be money in them thar hills.'”

As well as making bank, M3GAN is also impressing audiences and critics alike.

IGN’s M3GAN review gave it 7/10 and said: “M3GAN lives up to its memorable pre-release hype for mostly better and sporadically worse. Gerard Johnstone was the correct director choice, and Akela Cooper attempts deeper storytelling explorations centred around contemporary technological distractions — but you're watching for M3GAN. That's why she dazzles as the titular tyrant ready to rumble in the name of hardcoded primary user love, even at a detriment to the scenes where she's relegated obsolete.”
