Bella Ramsey Says The Last of Us Season 2 Is Likely 'If People Keep Watching'

The Last of Us HBO star Bella Ramsey has stated that a second season of the series is likely if people continue to watch.

In an interview with the BBC, Ramsey - who plays Ellie in the TV adaptation - said that “if people keep watching, I think [a second series] is pretty likely. It’s down to the guys at HBO”.

The Game of Thrones star went on to caution that nothing had yet been confirmed, and that “we’ll have to wait and see”.

A robust 4.7 million viewers tuned in to watch the premiere of The Last of Us when it aired on HBO Max and linear TV on January 15 earlier this month. That figure makes the first episode of the zombie-centric video game adaptation HBO’s second-best debut of the last decade behind House of the Dragon, which pulled in 9.998 million viewers when it premiered in August 2022.

During the BBC interview Ramsey also explained that they hadn't been a fan of video games prior to taking on the role, but that they had recently started a playthrough of The Last of Us Part I.

"It's really cool; I'm really into it. I think being in the show might have converted me,” said Ramsey, before adding that "it's really cool that video games can work in a cinematic medium".

IGN gave Season 1 of The Last of Us a 9/10, stating that it was a “stunning adaptation that should thrill newcomers and enrich those already familiar with Joel and Ellie’s journey”.

Neil Druckmann, whdo was a creator of the property and creative director for the 2013 game, recently let on in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that a second season could deal with the events that played out in The Last of Us Part II.

“We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games,” explained Druckmann. “We won’t run into the same issue as Game of Thrones since Part II doesn’t end on a cliff-hanger.”

Whilst the series is a mostly faithful to its video game source material, episode two highlighted that it's creators weren't afraid to deviate from the lore of the game where they viewed necessary.
