What to Expect From DC in 2023: Movies and TV

The heroes and villains of the DC Universe are making some noise in 2023, both in movies and in television, so we’ve made a list of every live-action DC movie and series coming your way next year.

As we all know, there are many, many DC projects in various stages of development at any given time, so for this list, we’re focusing on the movies and TV shows that have an actual release date or have at least been confirmed as a 2023 release. With that said, let’s get on to the good stuff!

A quick look at DC movies and TV series coming in 2023:

  • Shazam! Fury of the Gods
  • The Flash
  • Blue Beetle
  • Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
  • The Flash (Season 9)
  • Superman & Lois (Season 3)
  • Doom Patrol (Season 4)
  • Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special
  • Gotham Knights (Season 1)

DC Movies in 2023

Shazam! Fury of the Gods

The first DC movie release of 2023 will be Shazam! Fury of the Gods, striking theaters on March 17. This sequel once again features youngster Billy Batson and his friends, who can all now supersize themselves into superpowered superheroes. And putting all that superness to the test is the villainous duo Hespera and Kalypso… and a whole lot of fantastical beasts.

Release Date: March 17, 2023

The Flash

The Flash movie has been in development for a long, long time, and now it’s finally going to make it to the finish line on June 16. The trailer shows off a Flashpoint-inspired story featuring what appears to be time travel, multiple Flashes and a Supergirl from another universe, and heavy teases for the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman. Yes, actor Ezra Miller’s many headline-making, alleged legal issues are troubling, but they did release an apology in August 2022, and all reports indicate that the studio is determined to still release the film as planned.

Release Date: June 16, 2023

Blue Beetle

The Blue Beetle movie featuring the Jaime Reyes version of the character is set for release on August 18. The film was originally going to be a straight-to-streaming release for HBO Max but was upgraded to a full-on theatrical release, which probably means a bigger budget to show off all the crazy cool things the Blue Beetle suit can do, and the first teaser poster shows off Khaji Da in all its alien tech glory. Finally, a superhero movie production filled with nothing but good news.

Release Date: August 18, 2023

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Finally, the last DC movie of 2023 is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, a sequel to the 2018 hit that earned over $1.1 billion at the global box office. Plot details are still slim but a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s production teased Arthur Curry will be getting a new supersuit and Mera will once again be getting in on the under-sea action. As far as the villains go, it looks like they’re going to break Aquaman’s brother Orm out of prison, and Black Manta is still seeking vengeance on Aquaman, but something tells there’s an even more dangerous evil coming up from the depths.

Release Date: December 25, 2023

DC TV Shows in 2023

Superman & Lois (Season 3)

Superman & Lois is flying into the new year with Season 3. Though we don’t know the release date just yet, we do know the 15-episode season will feature the introduction of the villainous organization known as Intergang. And just a heads up, Jordan Elsass, the actor who played Jonathan Kent, stepped away from the role for personal reasons, so the part was recast with actor Michael Bishop now playing the super son.

Release Date: 2023

The Flash (Season 9)

The ninth and final season of the long-running television series The Flash will race to our screens on February 8. Given that pretty much all other remaining Arrowverse shows were canceled in 2022, this last season of The Flash will not only have to wrap up its own story but also, effectively, act as a farewell to an entire era of DC superhero TV. Given all of the heroic exploits we’ve seen Barry Allen and friends do so far, something tells us they’re up to the task. Just be sure to bring tissues.

Release Date: February 8, 2023

Doom Patrol (Season 4)

Doom Patrol is already in the middle of Season 4, with Part 1’s six episodes running from December 2022 into January 2023. Then the show will go on hiatus before releasing another six episodes for Part 2. Season 4 sends the team to the future where they must once again save the world, and they also have to deal with singing butts, which would be a really weird thing to say about any other show, but for this one feels just right. Just try not to imagine what their breath smells like.

Release Date: Part 1 - December 2022, Part 2 - TBD 2023

Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special

While the adult animated series Harley Quinn has been renewed for Season 4, the next time we’ll see the maiden of mischief is in February 2023 for “Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special.” We’ll see how Harley and Ivy spend the couples’ holiday together, and we’ll get a peek at how her gang celebrates, too. And given the title and, well, everything we’ve come to expect from this show, that will surely delight and disgust us in equal measure.

Release Date: February 2023

Gotham Knights (Season 1)

In this new DC TV series Gotham Knights, Batman is dead, and now it’s up to his adopted son, Turner Hayes, to protect his city along with other familiar Gotham faces like Carrie Kelley, Harper Row and her brother Cullen, Stephanie Brown, and Duela Dent. Reports say they’ll be up against Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face, as well as the Court of Owls, aka scary bird-masked murders. And before you ask, yes, this show just happens to have the same plot as the 2022 DC video game of the same name, but aside from that similarity, the two Gotham Knights projects are unrelated. Gotham Knights, the TV show, is scheduled to debut sometime in 2023.

Release Date: 2023

Other Upcoming DC Movies and TV Shows

Now, those are all of the projects that are tied to some sort of release date, but there are plenty more in various stages of planning and development, so keep on top of those with our list of upcoming DC movies and TV shows. If you didn’t see a DC project you were looking for, it may be accounted for on our list of canceled DC movies and TV shows.
