James Cameron Says Another Terminator Reboot Is 'in Discussion'

James Cameron has revealed that another Terminator reboot is currently "in discussion," but nothing is set in stone at this time.

During an appearance on the SmartLess podcast, Cameron discussed all things invented reality and artificial intelligence, which quickly got him onto the topic of Terminator. He admitted that he had been toying with the idea of relaunching the franchise, but "nothing has been decided" yet, even though he already knows the direction he would take it in.

While speaking about the themes of his movies, Cameron briefly shifted to AI and his interest in exploring it further on screen. He said: "If I were to do another Terminator film and maybe try to launch that franchise again, which is in discussion, but nothing has been decided, I would make it much more about the AI side of it than bad robots gone crazy."

The last movie Cameron directed in the franchise was Terminator 2: Judgment Day. He had no involvement with the three sequels that followed but returned as a producer on Terminator: Dark Fate — a movie that he said he was "reasonably happy" with, though he acknowledged that it might have worked better without the original stars.

"The movie could have survived having Linda in it," he said. "I think it could have survived having Arnold in it, but when you put Linda and Arnold in it and then, you know, she's 60-something, he's 70-something, all of a sudden it wasn't your Terminator movie, it wasn't even your dad's Terminator movie, it was your granddad's Terminator movie."

Terminator: Dark Fate earned over $250 million at the worldwide box office, but with a production budget of $185 million, plus $80 million to $100 million in global marketing and distribution fees, it was estimated that the film would need to bring in close to $450 million to break even. It did, however, receive some positive reviews from critics.

IGN's review of Terminator: Dark Fate praised the movie for largely succeeding where the last three installments have failed "to make the franchise pop again," with the film serving as both "a suitable closing chapter for the original two films and a possible gateway to exciting new chapters ahead."
