Google Doodle Tributes Gaming Pioneer Jerry Lawson

Google's latest home page Doodle paid tribute to gaming pioneer Jerry Lawson with an in depth game customisation tool.

Celebrating the late electronic engineer's 82nd birthday on December 1, the pixel art Google design has more than meets the eye as clicking it opens up a Brick Out style mini-game.

The real depth comes upon pressing the edit button, however, as it opens up an entirely customisable game editor where users can add enemies, switches, and other objects to create a completely different game.

Google tweeted to celebrate the new Doodle too, saying: "Gaming really levelled up when Jerry Lawson entered the chat. Lawson led the team that developed the first home video game system, which paved the way for modern game consoles."

Lawson was chief hardware engineer during development of the first cartridge-based home console called the Fairchild Channel F, which launched one year ahead of the Atari in 1976.

Its first cartridge included Tic Tac Toe, Shooting Gallery, Doodle, and Quadradoodle, while later packages included the likes of Alien Invasion, Pro-Football, Galactic Space Wars, and more.

Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelancer and acting UK news editor. He'll talk about The Witcher all day.
