Cocaine Bear Trailer Reveals a Bear on Cocaine

The first trailer for Cocaine Bear has appeared online and it's as crazy as you can imagine.

Announced earlier this year, Cocaine Bear tells the story of a drug-fuelled rampage by a bear who snaffled a load of cocaine and, incredibly, it’s inspired by real events.

Back in September 1985, a 175lb black bear in north Georgia wolfed down an entire duffel bag full of cocaine that had been abandoned by drug smuggler Andrew Thornton. However, as far as we know, the real-life bear didn’t go on a murderous rampage afterward.

The real-life story is far sadder. Having ingested huge amounts of cocaine, the bear subsequently overdosed and was found three months later next to 40 plastic containers of the drug.

The upcoming horror-comedy is directed by Pitch Perfect star Elizabeth Banks and features Keri Russell, Margo Martindale, Alden Ehrenreich, O’Shea Jackson Jr, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson alongside Kahyun Kim, Christian Convery, Brooklynn Prince, and newcomer Scott Seiss. The film also stars Ray Liotta in one of his final roles before his death earlier this year.

The trailer itself looks suitably ridiculous – featuring a CGI bear on a cocaine-fuelled rampage while local law enforcement officers look on in sheer terror, trying to make sense of it all.

Of course, it’s not the only highly anticipated bear-based horror to be released next year, following on from the even more ridiculous Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.

It’s certainly a good time for scary bears, just make sure you don’t go down to the woods next year. Cocaine Bear is set to debut in theatres on February 23, 2023.
