Ryan Reynolds' Studio is Making a John Candy Documentary

Ryan Reynolds has revealed that he is working on a new documentary through his Maximum Effort production company that will reflect on the life of the late comedy actor John Candy.

Reynolds announced on Twitter that he and Colin Hanks are developing the nonfiction film together, celebrating the life and legacy of the comedy legend who sadly passed away in 1994. "With John Candy trending, I'll just say I love him," he wrote. "So much so, Maximum Effort is working on a documentary on his life with Colin Hanks. Expect tears."

The official Maximum Effort Twitter account then retweeted Reynolds' announcement. The tweet included a classic tug-on-your-heart-strings movie quote from John Candy in his role as Del Griffith in the 1987 comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles, which started trending on the platform shortly after the movie's 4K re-release became public knowledge.

A representative for Reynolds told People that the Candy family had given Maximum Effort special access to the beloved actor's "archive and home video footage" for the project. Both of his children also commented on the documentary after the news had made the rounds on Twitter, with John's son Christopher Candy simply confirming: "This is all true."

John's daughter Jennifer Candy also excitedly shared the announcement with her followers. "Boom! So looking forward to working on this with them and our family. This project is in great hands," she wrote in a tweet, acknowledging the Candy family's approval and personal involvement with the project.

Candy died at the age of 43 after suffering a heart attack while filming Wagons East in Mexico. He had become a household name in the 1980s for starring in such films as Stripes, Spaceballs, and Uncle Buck. One of his most renowned performances was that of Del Griffith, the relentlessly optimistic shower curtain ring salesman in Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

In the movie, he stars opposite Steve Martin's uptight Neal Page, who is desperately trying to make it home to his family in time for Thanksgiving. Candy and Martin make for a perfect odd couple, enduring blazing fires, shared hotel rooms and those famous soft pillows. The film is getting a 4K re-release with over an hour of bonus footage on November 22, 2022.
